Separate the egg whites from the yolks.

Place a pot with the milk over medium heat until it comes to a boil — don't forget to stir so the bottom doesn't scorch.

Remove from the heat, add the vanilla extract, and set aside.

In a bowl, add the egg yolks and the sugar, and beat until nice and creamy.

Add the cornstarch and mix it in.

Gradually pour in the milk a little at a time while whisking.

Transfer the mixture to a pot and cook over medium heat while stirring.
